ZAC BENDRICK

About

Zac’s work investigates the layered nature of identity through expressive, multi-faceted portraiture. Each figure is composed of overlapping faces, fragmented gestures, and vibrant color palettes that reflect a shifting inner life. These portraits are not literal depictions but imagined personas—composite reflections of emotional states, memories, and subconscious impressions. The intuitive brushwork and bold use of color create a sense of psychological motion, inviting viewers to engage with the fluidity of selfhood. His paintings blur the line between abstraction and figuration, offering a visceral exploration of the complexities that reside within a single individual.

The Echo Series

The Echo Series (what I am calling it now) is a body of work I’ve been building that focuses on the layered experience of the self. Each piece centers on a figure surrounded by alternate versions of themselves. Like echoes of thought or emotion caught in a single moment. The repeated faces and shifting expressions explore how identity isn’t fixed, but something constantly in motion. I often use hands in expressive gestures to bring attention to the face and the feeling behind it.

The bold colors, floral elements, and surreal details are all part of how I translate inner emotion into something visual. These portraits aren’t about realism but about capturing a kind of inner intensity, what it feels like to be pulled in multiple directions at once. As I keep adding to this series, it’s become a reflection of memory, emotion, and the ways we try to hold ourselves together.

I see the Echo Series as a pivotal point in my journey and something that ties together everything I’ve been building over the last ten years. These portraits aren’t just part of a standalone series; they’re becoming the heart of a much larger collection that reflects the full arc of my creative life so far. The themes I’ve always returned to, identity, emotion, color, movement…are all here, but distilled in a way that finally feels like my voice has fully come into focus.

As I continue to add new pieces, the vision is to bring these works into a larger narrative, one that holds space for all the experimentation, growth, and searching I’ve done up to this point. This isn’t just a series, it’s becoming a foundation for the bigger story I want to tell through my work, something that feels personal, alive, and lasting.
